    Job Description

    Mitchell International, Inc. is seeking a highly qualified senior attorney with deep general litigation experience to lead our litigation group within the Legal Department. The Associate General Counsel, Litigation will report to Mitchell’s General Counsel, and will manage a team of attorneys and paralegals handling litigation matters for Mitchell. This position requires a “hands on” leader to manage complex litigation matters across the U.S., improve existing strategies and processes, reduce risks, improve management reporting to the General Counsel and other executive team members, and provide advice and counsel as required in judicial proceedings and related to developments in relevant U.S. legislation and administrative regulations.     • Lead responsibility for a diverse range of litigation, including managing litigation in the state and federal court system and various state workers compensation systems, and managing subpoenas and other information requests and inquiries from third parties.
    • Responsible for managing an internal team of lawyers and paralegals in Dallas and Portland engaged in litigation, a high volume medical bill dispute defense process in the workers compensation system on behalf of certain customers, and third party subpoena compliance, which requires, among other things, strong advocacy and strategy, coordinating activities, internally and externally, and working cross-functionally with teams.
    • Advises General Counsel and company management on strategy and resolution of cases and general risk management.
    • Drives strategy, execution, and management of outside counsel on litigation and related matters, including collaborating with outside counsel to manage all aspects of outside counsel relationships, including: staffing, litigation strategy, budgets, alternative fee arrangements, work product, discovery, and developing initiatives for reducing outside counsel spend.
    • Collaborates with the General Counsel on periodic reporting on litigation results, budgets, forecasts, exposure analysis and litigation strategies, as well as evaluating litigation strategies, expenses and reserves with the company’s independent auditors, risk managers and business unit leaders.
    • Other special projects and responsibilities based on the skills and interests of the candidate and needs within the company.


    • Education: Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school
    • Licenses: Member in good standing with the California Bar


    • Attorney with 15+ years of experience in an in-house legal department and/or a major law firm handling complex litigation, including employment, and pre-litigation disputes. At least 5 years of managing attorneys and paralegals is preferred.
    • Demonstrated record for success strategizing, handling and managing complex commercial disputes to successful resolution.
    • Experience handling class action employment litigation matter is a plus, but not a prerequisite.

    • Demonstrated attention to detail, discretion, and experience handling highly sensitive and confidential information
    • Expertise with e-discovery issues, including document retention policies and procedures, third party subpoena compliance, and requests for information and corporate records
    • Demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards
    • Position is located in San Diego, and requires regular travel among Mitchell offices in Dallas and Portland and as otherwise required for litigation matters.
